A report
Economics and the Human Person
Who serves who?Slowly participants started arriving from the different corners of Europe and from the five different London airports as well. For some a great adventure due to the weather circumstances, for some a piece of cake.
After the introductory film ‘Wall street’ it’s time for the real work on human economics! Father Samuel introduces us into the different questions regarding work as a dimension of the human person and the challenge of economics in modern society. Tim Church from McKinsey & Company gives his experience and perspective on the noble purpose of economics: a service to mankind.
Small workshops encourage us to deepen our personal reflection on the importance of work in daily life, not only as a means to earn our living, but more as an essential part in the structure of becoming a human person.

Report of a participant
‘Sweet, sweet peace’, ‘an indefinable term’, ‘an utopia’, ‘hippies with a joint’, ‘what to do with it?!’ These were the different associations to peace the Dutch participants of the conference Commitments for Peace had beforehand. Despite the ashes (from the Icelandic vulcano), almost fifty participants from Lithuania, Rumania, Austria, the United Kingdom, and some from Albania, Croatia, Nigeria and France, gathered together in the royal residence of The Hague, for a meeting that would last over four days.
The program was packed and consisted of different parts. Framing lectures, reflective lectures, workshops, visits to and encounters with people engaged in the quest for peace, prayer times and socializing. Each day had a different topic which would be elaborated throughout the day.

European countries are very diverse but work together. Why? Peace and the principles of human economics form a rationale for the European Union cooperation project. This was studied in The Hague and London. A very strong element of a united Europe is its millenia old shared cultural history as well. Culture is the topic of our next conference on Europe. We invite you to Lithuania to discover the importance of culture for Europe. Located at the crossroad between western, eastern, central and northern Europe, many influences come together. Its capital Vilnius was European Capital of Culture in 2009 and therefore an excellent location to talk culture. As relevant is the impact of the great wars of the last century on this country. Nazism and communism formed cultural shocks and after many years of occupation Lithuanians got their freedom back, also their cultural freedom.

Na lang zwoegen en ploegen, veel zweet en tranen was daar dan eindelijk de grootse opening van de volledig gerenoveerde Johanneszaal in Den Haag. Wat eens werd uitgemaakt voor bijeengeraapt zooitje meubelen – “kringloopwinkel” om de woorden van een cursist te gebruiken (die ondanks dat toch wekelijks terug bleef komen!) – is nu omgetoverd tot een conferentiezaal in stijl.

Lang werden leken gezien als tweederangs christenen, onder de priesters gerangschikt. Luther echter stelde al dat het hele volk priesterlijk is, de apostel Petrus zegt immers in zijn eerste brief : “Gij zijt een volk van priesters”. Deze visie is intussen ook in de katholieke Kerk herontdekt. Maar heb je dan überhaupt nog priesters nodig? Waar ligt het verschil tussen het ambtelijk en het koninklijk priesterschap? Hoe vullen ze elkaar aan? Waarin ligt de specifieke taak van de leken in de Kerk?Docent: pater Ignatius-Maria

Het nieuwe activiteitenseizoen bij de broeders in Den Haag gaat van start! En dan ook nog in een compleet vernieuwde Johanneszaal; maandenlang werd gewerkt om de zaal op te knappen en hem in een nieuw jasje te steken. De aftrap vindt plaats op 1 oktober a.s. om 15.30 uur. Er zal worden gesproken over oude en nieuwe activiteiten. Tevens is het ook een goede gelegenheid om kennis te maken met de gemeenschap van de broeders of om elkaar weer even te kunnen spreken onder het genot van een drankje. Zin in een gezellig weekend met leeftijdsgenoten in hartje Den Haag? De broeders van St. Jan organiseren voor het eerst een weekend voor jongens en meisjes in de leeftijd van 12 tot 16 jaar (vanaf middelbare school).
Het weekend zal in het thema staan van: Inside and Outside. Heb jij zin om jezelf en anderen van top tot teen en van binnen en buiten te leren kennen? Dan is dit weekend helemaal iets voor jou. Naast alle gezelligheid (outside) zal het ook gaan om verdieping in het geloof (inside) en de vraag: Hoe kun je echt zijn? Hoe kan mijn uiterlijk overeenkomen met mijn innerlijk?

Nieuw voor het seizoen 2011-2012 zijn drie weekenden speciaal voor studenten en young professionals. Onnodig te zeggen, dat de wereld van vandaag fundamentele vragen oproept die een zoektocht naar de waarheid vereisen en verdienen. Het zoeken naar menselijke en christelijke waarheden in je eigen vakgebied is dan ook onontbeerlijk, zeker als je wilt voorkomen dat je werk hermetisch afgesloten raakt van je katholieke levensovertuiging.

Iedere vrijdagochtend nodigen van de vastentijd de broeders en de parochie St. Jacobus de Meerdere uit om samen de Lauden te bidden en daarna een vastenontbijt (thee of koffie en brood). Een mogelijkheid om de veertigdagentijd bewuster te beleven. Iedereen is van harte welkom!

De Broeders van Sint Jan hebben hun leven aan God gewijd, ten dienste van God en hun naasten. Zij willen leven volgens het Evangelie van Jezus Christus en zich door hun gebed en hun activiteiten inzetten voor jong en oud.
